Have you ever looked at a photo booth and asked yourself–whose idea was this? A Siberian immigrant by the name Anatol Josepho is credited with creating the photo booth, and his invention developed a new way to commemorate experiences for the masses.
Anatol’s idea was to come up with a way to create a fast, efficient, and less expensive way to capture memorable photographs. An avid photographer, at the age of 19, Anatol began experimenting and drawing designs for an automated photo machine, available for the average working man. The device would be activated by a coin and would self-operate, giving its customers beautiful and affordable photos that document their memories and experiences. Anatol then began to create a photo paper that could produce a toned positive image without the used of a film negative. He spent years figuring out how to use the appropriate chemicals to develop his paper, and in designing a delivery system for his machine.
Anatol was a well-known and successful photographer, he funded his studio and photographic machine project with his photographic skill. By age 30, Anatol was still drawing plans for his machine. He raised $11,000 for his idea–to give you an idea of how much money that was back then, a reasonably sized house was $2,000 in the 1920s–Anatol then received additional loans, hired machinists and engineers, and built his Photomaton machine.
When released, crowds of up to 7,500 would line up to pay 25 cents for a strip of eight instant photographs. Anatol sold the patent and the machines for $1,000,000–ushering in a new era of affordable and easy personal photography, available for the masses and not just the wealthy elite. Later on, Andy Warhol even promoted the photo booth as a cheap and effective camera that is capable of cutting to the bone of an image, making it perfect of use in graphic design.
Even today, people love to rush into photobooths, squeezing in large groups of friends, making funny faces, and kissing their loved ones to commemorate a fun or special occasion.
